Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining the NY group of Black Girls RUN! for their annual MLK Run which consisted of 6 miles — from Brooklyn to Manhattan and back. Wowzers.
Now, I’m not completely new to running. I’ve started and stopped the Couch 2 5k twice but never finished it. However I do enjoy running. So after a sista friend of mine ran with the New Jersey group, I decided I was gonna get on board and join the NYC group. I look up their info, found their FB group and joined. I posted in the group that I was looking to join some runs, and someone respond about the MLK run. That was Sunday. The run was Monday at 8:30a. Whoa boy. The Creator was callin’ my bluff. If you say you’re gonna run, then run Malikah.
So Monday morning came and I woke up….late. However I got to the bridge in time, yet still missed the group photo. I was further up the bridge waiting. Well as I was waiting, I turned around and saw all these beautiful black women running towards me. Ok, here we go.
What happened next was nothing short of amazing. I ran/jog/walked approximately 4 miles. Yes run, jogged and walked. The point is, I didn’t stop moving. I don’t think I’ve ran that much in my life. And believe it or not, I didn’t feel that bad. I was originally going to stop of the 3 mile mark, but my new sole sista Lisa asked me if I wanted to try to make it to 14th st, and I said sure.
Lisa. Beautiful Lisa. She was great. She was so positive and inspirational and told me about her journey to running. And she was patient with me. When I needed to walk, she would walk. I am so grateful to her, because Lord knows I was super duper nervous when I got to the bridge. I didn’t know what to expect. But not only did I meet the beautiful Lisa, but there were SOOO many positive black women running who would cheer us on and vice versa as we ran. What a beautiful day.
I can say that I’ve found a place. A place where I am supported and not judged. Encouraged and not belittled. And fly. I can’t wait to run with them again.
