Rest In Peace James Dewitt Yancey
February 10, 2006, 3 days after his 32nd birthday, J Dilla passed away from complications from lupus. I think I found out via Okayplayer. I remember picking up a Real Detroit that week or so and seeing Dilla’s face on the cover. It saddens me a little bit that he wasn’t able to see the full impact his music made, however knowing that there are those of us who will keep his legacy alive makes me feel much better.
So for today’s jam, I picked one of my favorite Dilla joints. There’s something refreshing about this song. That feeling you get when you see or hear something for the first time. The butterflies in your stomach. The coolness that washes over you. Everything just stops. That’s how this song makes me feel. Whether it’s someone that’s making you feel this way or something, there’s nothing better than that.
And then the video, aww man.
Long Live Dilla.
