Drake and his Hotline Bling on the Dance Floor

Hotline Bling

Hotline Bling

Last night, Drake released the visuals for his new single “Hotline Bling.” I didn’t pay too much attention to it at the time because something more important was happening, but come Tuesday morning my Twitter timeline was full of the video and the subsequent memes, which is
truthfully what we all were waiting for but I didn’t say it.

Let’s analyze this, shall we?

The song itself has nestled itself at No. 2 on the Billboard charts and I wouldn’t be surprised if this Director X guided video pushes the single to the coveted #1 spot. Released exclusively on Apple Music the video has been getting its fair share of…well…shares. I admit, I didn’t think there was going to be a video for the track. I just thought it was his version of D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha” and he’d continue focusing on promoting his newly-released mixtape with Future. But, I was wrong. Boy was I wrong.

Aesthetically, the video is actually really nice. I like how the pastel colors compliment the lightness on the beat. The boxes with Drake inside I believe symbolize him being lonely, knowing that he serves only one purpose in the said young lady’s life (which for some reason he can’t EVER seem to get over on ANY album, but I digress). And of course there is the customary troop of women that is included in any rap video nowadays.

That’s pretty much it. The video is quite simple, which is refreshing as it forces you to pay attention to the lyrics. But then……he starts dancing.

Now…..I don’t know if Drake was being silly or serious with his moves, but they completely take me out of the video and instead of paying attention to the lyrics, now I’m waiting for the next Diddy/Kanye inspired step. I will say the scene of him dancing with the young lady was nice. It fit. Why he decided to lay his head on her gyrating behind, I don’t know, but it’s dancing Drake. There’s nothing more to know.

And the memes. Forget the video,  just play these on repeat for 4 minutes and 45 seconds.

Nevertheless, the video will now live in infamy thanks to Drake’s cool dance grooves.
